I used to own a 1998 sohc and it returned 36/38 and I have now gone back to a Jimny after 4 yrs with a Swift and bought a 2008 jlx+. I haven't actually calculated it yet as I only got it last week but it's looking good.
Like adamatdraycott I drive very steady.
I work nights and coming home at around 0200 I cross 5 roundabouts and 2 major junctions totalling 10 miles. I do it all in top gear using the low gearing on the Jimny and of course assuming there is no one around to stop my progress.
In general driving I let the engine slow me down until I have to use a lower gear at junctions but the Jimny is very flexible and will drop right down to around around 20mph in top gear(if yours doesn't it's either modded or it needs a tune) and accelarate away on a very light throttle. Just let the torque do the work don't force it.
I sometimes short shift up or down as I find on the move you don't have to go lower than 3rd unless you actually get stopped so 3rd to 5th up or down or 2nd to 4th etc. topping out at 3000rpm or 50/55mph. I drive a truck so drive the Jimny at what I call "truck speed"
The car is standard.
V8dougie I couldn't help notice your car is serviced by a mobile mechanic? Now he may be a great mechanic or your best friend but with due respect does he have ALL the equipment available to fully service your car?
Most of us can do the basic stuff eg oils, filters, brakes etc. but what about injectors, electronics??
Our local Suzuki dealer is great and every time any of our cars have gone in they never fail to get better mpg afterwards. You never get ripped off and they go out of their way to be helpful.
I know what some people think of main dealers(justified in some cases) so I'm not suggesting you go to your Suzuki dealer just try getting an engine tune up with someone who has a good local reputation not the local tyre place.
I'll report back next week when I know for sure the mpg. It goes in for a service on Monday.

I started off high and worked my way down ever since :-)

I have just got my Jimny, a few weeks ago, and I am monitoring the MPG. It is a completely standard, X reg 2001.

I have been using Shell, and have averaged 32 mpg, and I am still getting used to the vehicle, and adjusting my driving style. 55 mph occasionally 60 mph. Apart from one fill up with ASDA fuel where I dropped to 27 mpg. Its SHELL every time for me now .....

Hi guys I've got a standard 2000plate jimny auto which will give me 250 miles on a brimmed tank, but if I only put half a tank in I can get 150-170 miles which if doubled would be 300-340 miles for an equivalent full tank. So I only do half tanks as the extra weight makes a difference. The wife has also tested my theory in her td4 freelander & found it to work.

I've never calculated my MPG but I've noticed that it's pretty good around town, but awful on the motorway. I used over half a tank of petrol driving from Stafford to Northampton and back. Definitely taking the A-roads in future!
