If it isn't broken, don't fix it!

Makes more sense to fix it when they're nearing the end of their life that to wait for them to break if you ask me!

How do you know they are nearing the end of their life, as you said the brakes work perfectly. Discs and pads usually have to be changed countless times before the calipers need serious attention

I imagine most cars go to the grave with the same callipers they were born with. If the seals look good and a peak behind shows the piston to be shiny then there is no reason why they will fail.

I meant the discs are nearing the end of their life and since the calipers are grimy and pitted I thought it would make sense to replace all the rubber bits and clean and paint them.

However since the general idea seems to be is the pistons are not stuck and look good not to touch them, that's what I'll do first! I'll just paint them and replace the bleeder valves and hoses then as they are pretty crusty.

I checked the caliper pistons today and when the brake was fully depressed the pistons on both sides weren't even far out enough to force the pads on to the discs if there was NO pad left. They came out maybe about 5-6mm. I then tried pushing them back with my hands, drivers side I managed to push back, drivers side I couldn't shift. Also the following photos show the pistons and related bits in a bit of a crappy state, worth cleaning pistons up and replacing rubber boots and grommets I'd say...?
