GraphicX wrote: tried another cam sensor (had a spare from the G16B which i know is good as i tried it on the jimny prior to swapping engines).

i'm 'fairly' sure the ring is on in the correct position, i had a mechanic fit it & he used a bolt through #1 cylinder spark plug to find true top dead centre on both engines & marked it out. only thing he may have done is possibly gotten it 180° out, but i really doubt it.

You can't get it 180 out on the crank, as the jimny uses a wasted spark system 1&4 and 2&3 fire together. You could get it 180 out on the cam, then it would be 90 degrees out at the crank and it would never run.

Beats me why it even needs a cam sensor in the first place, the crank would be more accurate.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

That loose wire is a ground, try connecting it back to the bulkhead. From what I recall the cam sensor should be connected back to a ground connection on the ECU.

Some Suzukis and a bunch of motorcycles.

@ cider; i've pulled #1 & #3 plugs & couldn't get a spark.

@ martin; thought of that, been caught out & about by opening my doors with the key instead of the fob so thought of it pretty quick but not the issue. starter cranks over fine which it won't do if immobilised.

@ facade & suzukisam; that's the stuff that's beyond my knowledge (all the timing etc) so that's why i had it done for me. it's my biggest worry that the ring's in the wrong position & in all honesty seems the most likely. not sure how much trouble it's going to be for me to get hold of another cam, if it comes to it i'll have to hit up the auszooker guys & see if someone is willing to separate from an engine if it comes down to it.

@ rhinoman; last night i ran a wire from that loose lead to the negative terminal on the battery & didn't seem to make any sort of difference. i'm scrounging through the workshop manual you've shared in between working to see if i can see where it goes properly though.

@ riceye; i checked the fuses last night, didn't think to check the wires beneath so will do tonight right after work.

as it stands i'm hoping my friend who's a mechanic will be able to come by again, see if he can see for sure there's no spark at the plugs & look at timing etc, from there if he has no success then i'm looking at getting a replacement cam with ring in place it seems, if it doesn't start with that as well i'm pretty much out of luck it feels =(
