no chance i can borrow a cam unfortunately.

i would've thought like said earlier though i'd get something out of the engine even with the cam ring in the wrong position. hopefully the weekend will yield something, but it could also just lead me on another wild goose chase.

if you have any photos of your cam & ring that'd be fantastic to see so i can compare to mine though.

Thats is the notch on the camshaft itself that i measure everything off i didn't have to take the cam out of 1.6 either just left it all in so just had to remove rocker to mark it all up . Dont take any notice of pick up ring its just put bk on in any old place as its a spare

thanks for that, i'm sure i'll be revisiting the cam ring sooner rather than later, just glad my mate knows how to get it on & off with the engine in. right now i'm really leaning toward something electrical being the issue, either way though i'll be going through the wiring, plugs & sensors this weekend so hopefully that turns up something, really sucks not having a car & thinking about buying just an old bomb to get by with for now (missed a REALLY cheap gti swift the other day i would've loved to have picked up, would know doubt had lead me to buying a sierra to swap the motor into later though, i never learn lol).

just correctly tested both coil packs & i've got sparks coming from both. so really happy about that, but it means the cam ring is definitely the issue.

i have the image from the workshop manual showing the 'standard' location, but is there any chance someone has an image of another cam or has a cam out they can take pictures of so that i can try & gauge it a little ?

thoughts are right now to possibly place it in the location in the manual, 'hopefully' have the engine running & then adjust the resistor on the ECU to set correct timing, but would love to see another cam with it on just to see how close it is to it.

well firstly, thanks everyone who shared some advice, has been a major help  you guys have been just fantastic.

today we were able to get my jimny going again, 8 days after starting the engine swap.

in the end it was the cam sensor ring. apparently the cam in the G16B is in the wrong position, not sure how it all works but when it should be at TDC #1 it's actually TDC #4, or at least that's how i took it. i watched my mate redo it, i said maybe we should just fit the ring as per the service manual but he was adamant it was the cam in the engine & in the end he was right. it idles great so i'm guessing he's lined it up very well (yet to run a timing gun on it).

had a couple of minor hiccups, the exhaust where it connects to the manifold has a leak & the tin cover for the bottom of the flywheel was hitting the flywheel & sounding awful so is off atm. apart from that it's excellent, massive improvement in bottom end power, quite addictive giving it squirts & letting it take off =)
