@ cider; that's what i thought.
@ martin; i thought when it was immoblised it wouldn't kick over at all, got me worrying about that now, will double check tonight.
@ facade; well last night we removed the ring & refitted it 180 degrees to where it was. i really thought this would yield some type of result but still just kicks over & doesn't start. i'm not too sure what to do from here, going to get a multimeter & start checking connectors & sensors as per the workshop manual but it really has me stumped (not to mention stressed out).

it was all aligned to top dead centre when doing the ring & all appeared perfect to me, mechanic did it so i'm confident he has that right.

the motor (as in block & head) was a complete running unit when it was removed from the baleno, so it was all firing & working correctly at that stage, we didn't alter/change the timing belt etc at all (it has a quite new belt on it too).

Its got to be the camshaft pick up ring then as i would of thought even putting the motor at top dead centre and trying to set the pick up ring that there is nothing to mark it from so its a guess. Ill be honest i hardly even measured mine i just guessed but had the 1.3 one in my hand so i found the little notch on the camshaft its self not the ring and same on the 1.3 cam scribed a line on them both making sure it run onto pick up ring pulled both off swapped over and that was that ill try get pics is there no way you can source /borrow a cam ?to double check and eliminate this as the problem.
