Excise duty is not related to mpg.

if the jimny was that good on fuel I think the road tax would be lower after 51 plate
I had a Suzuki alto 03 reg got around 38 mpg out of that and it was £30 a year road tax

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there
Actually it is, they call it "grams of CO2 per km" which depends on how much fuel you burn per km.
for a petrol engine divide 6760 by the g/km to get mpg
for a diesel engine 7440 divided by g/km is mpg.
The latest jimny is 162 g/km, works out at 41mpg
A 2001 (when this came in) was taxed at 190g/km works out at 35.5mpg

Excise duty is not related to mpg.
Vehicle Excise Duty is based on the car's CO2 emissions
if a car gives out lower emissions its got to be better on fuel
so as a jimny is in a high co2 emissions its not the best on fuel is it

The VED is based on the manufacturers supplied mpg/CO2 output
Your Alto was 134g/km, which by the figures above works out to 50.4mpg, which is not a million miles from the 52 mpg Suzuki claimed originally.
Remember these are ideal figures on a rolling road following a test pattern of gearchanges etc. designed to get the CO2 to a minimum level to scrape in the lowest band possible.
You would have thought that they would stuff the exhaust with soda lime to absorb the CO2 for the test really
Don't believe me if you don't want to, but CO2 output per km is directly related to the MPG.

I started off high and worked my way down ever since
When I was touring Scotland in the more remote areas with little traffic I was bumbling along at 40 mph in top gear.
I wasn't measuring consumption but mpg did improve so drastically that I wondered if the gauge had stuck
I usually get mine in to top ASAP and drive with a light throttle at about 3000 rpm which equates to around 50/55 mph or 80/90 kph
I can assure you I get 36 mpg. Even on the motorways I only travel at 50 mph.
