The transfer box is at fault or the solenoid?

Erm... is there a way of checking?
We found that the front hubs weren't clicking - so I will be cleaning them up this just to rule out dirt in hubs.
But as the 4wd is selected there doesn't seem to be any drive and theres a loud grinding sound coming from the transfer box area...
Im still not sure if the broken air filter in the vacuum value under the bonnet is making it loose air / air leak so i will be replacing that also...

The solenoid is moving we could hear that from outside the car. As to if it is moving enough I'm not sure as I didn't take anything apart but it sounds just the same as mine in terms of duration and expected noise which makes me think the issue is deeper into the box. I could be wrong.
