You need the engine running to select 4wd, otherwise there is no vacuum to engage the hubs!

I was just checking if it changed without starting.

Even when started it doesn't engage.

Get under the car on the bottom of transfer box nearest to the front you will see a blue/black round part with two wires coming out of it check them properly as mine looked intact from looking under at the side or the car on of mine was just hanging on by the insulation I reconnected it tried 4wd no issue at all now

Does the small rubber air filter cause it not to select 4wd?

I says if clogged it won't select mine is broken. Iv just found all the rubber is perished. This is from the front under bonnet near vacuum valve I think it's called

Guys this is what's left of my small air filter under the bonnet.

I removed it and covered the pipe with a bit of tape to see if it had an air leak from there but still not engaging 4wd.

From what I can see the wires seem ok but That's by crawling under it in my drive.
