I'm getting ready to drill holes in the sills step region but just as I expected there is another skin inside the sills. I assume it is the same as on the Vitara sill and a cross section would look more like a Ш or Ф than a Ц.

I need to get the Waxoyl on both sides of that skin or the untreated side will continue to rust. I've seen this a few times when years later the sill covers have been taken off Vitaras and the sill has rotted away. You find there is a lot of untreated metal.

Looking down the hole for the step cover clip I can see the centre skin is just inboard. So I am assuming I need to drill at where the red marks are - is that correct?

I think that there are access holes to the inner box under the carpet. I'll have a look tomorrow.

There is a nasty cavity under the front of the rear seat, the vertical wall is double skinned.

When you get the waxoyl out, remove the seatbelts first!

Both front & back reels live inside the cavities, and will get waxoyl splashes on them, that shows when you pull the belt out. (Guess how I know)

I can't remember how I got it off, likely fairy liquid and warm water.

Oh, I used dinitrol, having had the usual lack of success with waxoyl over the years*, and it is just as useless

*Have you noticed that the bottom of your waxoyl tin rusts through and leaks, but the other tins on the shelf next to it don't?

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

Hehe yes thanks, I used to use Dinitrol and I don't know why I changed but I have the gun that screws on to the Waxoyl tins which I just refill. I think I switched because Dinitrol got hard to find.

Holes in the side of the sills would be a blessing.

My seat belts are linked to the explosive system - I don't know if I want to mess with them. TBH the REAL concern I have is with sills and door bottoms. You may have noticed I tend to have 20 year old motors (classic car insurance innit  Also, cheap on tax. ;) ) and the sills are really all that bug me.

I have a few tins of Waxoyl that have been on the shelf in my garage since I did my Pajero back on '04 and no signs of rusting yet! Must be lucky.

Front of the rear seat - thanks for the heads up. There is the same in the jack space at the back - double skin - and of course mine has suffered but I don't care about that. I don't know why we don't hack it out, make good the edges and just leave a gaping hole covered by that MDF or even put a plate across?? Why the jack was put there I'll never know. Under the hood was the best place ever because I junked it and made use of the space. I carried a bottle jack in me tool bag instead. ;) Anyhooo, I wasn't really intending to go inside the cab, just doors, sills, ladder chassis and tubular cross members; in fact anywhere that I can stuff the lance easily.

I am putting the job off until the MoT which I'll get done early next month early. I have only had it for a short while and it is a smoker and apparently started to smoke with the last owner who hasn't seen the mota for a year. If it fails on emissions or any other substantial work I'll reconsider my situation but I am not paying out cash on tins of Waxoyl just yet. It would be a shame to scrap it because physically it is in fantastic condition particularly underneath; you can put mechanicals right mostly but rot spells the end and this has none to speak of. I am looking to see this reach its 25th birthday.

There are access holes under the edge of the carpet with large plastic bungs in them. ;)

Nice one. B)

Just been and looked - they look nice and big too so that should give access to the inner side of the sill cavity.

If I open out the middle one of the step cover clip holes I should get access to the outer side of the cavity and reach all the way to the front and to the back. I think I will defo have to do that.
