How hard was it to separate the old CV joint from the halfshaft and then to install a new CV joint into the old halfshaft?

I used a hammer and a piece of 2" x 2" timber and it was loose the second hit of the hammer.

The CV joints are the same both sides the drive shafts are different lengths,

Are you saying Suzuki only sell both together,

I used Suzuki's original part catalogue for determining the part numbers. They have a blown out diagram of the front axle, and on that diagram, CV joint and halfshaft is classified as one item. They only differentiate between "LH" and "RH" sides.

wombat,
So you are saying that the difference between "LH" and "RH" CV+halfshaft combo is in the length of the halfshafts?
That would imply that the front axle differential is not in the middle of the axle? But I thought that the differential was in the middle of the axle? Am I wrong?

auchenblae,
did your hammering method damage the old CV furher? In other words, imagine if you were removing a healthy CV with that method, would you expect that a damage to the good CV would occur?

Also, how hard was it to install a new CV?

So, the Herth+Buss Jakoparts CV with part number J2828040 which you ordered, fitted nicely although it had 6 balls instead of 8? How does it work now after some driving?

If you look under your jimny you will see the front differential is offset to the o/s, which is why the driveshafts have to be different lengths. If you look under the rear you will see the same applies to that end as well

With regards to separating the CV from the drive shaft it is only held on by a spring steel ring and a sharp knock has it appart and no there was no damage at all to the old CV from the hammer blow using a piece of wood in between the hammer and the Cv joint. It would not have damaged the Cv to hit it direct with the hammer as it was not a big wallop!

We have driven say 50 miles or so since the replacement and no CV joint clicking and working well.

auchenblae,

since more than 2 months have passed since you installed a replacement Jakoparts CV joint, I suppose that now you have some significant mileage with that new part. How much mileage have you covered, and what is your experience?
