So after a little research into generators to power a MIG welder, thought I'd share as it may help others, of course my theories could have flaws so please feel free to correct me.

It seems that some 'old types' of generator are actually Alternators, and these are still widely available .. they produce AC only.

The newer type of generator is an 'Invertor Generator', which produces DC that is then changed to AC via an invertor. These are much lighter than a conventional Alternator and consequently more popular.

Hence the Alternator type producing AC without an invertor are probably more robust than the Invertor type, but need a sack barrow to transport them.

However I would think that an invertor generator would still power a welder, if it has a big enough outlet.

in either case like Busta says, it looks like a beast of generator is required and its likely to have wheels attached and is unlikely to ever be available as a £100 bargain.

:(

after having watched Wolf creek 2 that's a scary image Busta

there's a honda GX200 generator for sale local to me, that has max output listed as 4.8KW,

does anyone think it may be OK for light (3mm) work or is even that pushing it ?

thanks for any guidance
