I thought mig welders have big coils in them to bump up the amps is 10amps in high amount of amps in and if your mig takes 220 amps then surely to leads would melt as would all the wiring in workshop/house but correct me if im wrong

The plant reduces the voltage to increase the amps but it can only reduce it so far... around 50 volts of the top of my head

This is why our MIG at work is on 3 phase as it needs that extra voltage and power to go further up the amp range... Our MIG can kick out upwards of 400 amps if not more

It's basic electronics if you have a 16 amp ring then brilliant if you have a 32 amp cooker point then perfect hey if you have 3 phase then your on top of the WORLD!

But the MIG plant at work takes 220 amps to happily weld 6 mm

Where if you burn a 2.5mm electrode at 100 amps you will get the same penetration

Why do you think high pressure pip work it ether stick or TIG?

don't get too het up. people are commenting from their own very different experiences and i guess most are self taught. we make structural steelwork for buildings and with the wire size found it a nightmare on car bodywork getting the right mix of power and wire speed due to the thickness of the wire we use. a little hobby mig one of the lads had in the shop was much easier. oh and i hate stick welding .

standard jimny - for now

Ive a Clark 160 mig running gasless and its fine to me, I'm learning by messing with it and the main reason for gasless is I can also carry it safely and legally in my van. Its got me out of the shit at work a few times just for mounting unistrut in steel pits as drilling is a big no. My welding is far from perfect but i'm happy with my gasless mig, its just the wire is pricey and goes quick but I bill work for a reel after each time I use it. I got a solar automatic darkening visor from my local engineering suppliers for about £30 and its great.
