Please advise on this, as I got really surprised that the swivel balls must be dry. First I was delighted that my swivel hubs were well greased (that felt like good care maintenance), and now I get an impression like I might have devastated a good mechanical system.

In a nutshell the outer housing of the "ball joint" is not the CV joint and one needs to "go in" to sort it out. One of my pet gripes is that the housing, even with a so called seal which is hardly even a dust seal, does not protect the CV joint from ingress of stuff like water etc.

It's not necessary to grease the swivels but having grease on them won't have done any harm. If you want to tidy it up wipe the excess grease off with a bit of rag.

The advantage of not having grease on the swivels is that if it starts to magically appear again you will know your kingpin bearings and axle seal need replacing!

That is true but the CVs don't seem to suffer much because of it. Landy CV joints go more often than Jimny ones, the seals leak, oil leaks out of the drive flanges all over the wheels and the swivels themselves wear and are £100+ to replace. Then when you come to take it apart everything is 10x worse to work on because it's twice as heavy and covered in horrible CV sludge.
So I'd count your blessings!

A blessing for me though maybe not for mudplugging, rockclimbing, deep water waders would be IFS as on Vitaras.

Given that the only real difference between a Vit and a Jimny is the IFS, why even bother with a Jimny then?
