If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

I have a tow-trust, and I can see now that I could have fitted it with the bumper on (using the special extra jointy fingers and arms), and saved an afternoons work (10 mins to remove bumper, 4 hours to repair the holes in the tub underneath :S )
I had to scallop the drivers side drop bracket, as the tailpipe just touched it.
3 years on and it is as rusty as a piece of old iron from the bottom of the sea (so much for the plastic coating) so it is rust & hammerite now.

looks like I was ill-advised
appears to just relate to 13 pin sockets .........
"There's a basic security/damage check of 7-pin sockets, but 13-pin sockets will be subject to a full electrical connectivity check and incorrectly connected or inoperative circuits will result in failure."
so after all that, looks like I needn't have bothered fitting one

I think it all down to the year if they check the socket
take off the bumper to fit the tow bar and the socket
take off the bumper to fit the tow bar and the socket

Good write up, I did exactly the same thing recently but took the bumper off just to make it easier. I also moved my rear number plate because it was obscured by the towball, watch out for getting pulled on that one as per your second last picture.
