Fitting M15A VVT engine into non VVT M13A Jimny was created by Smoggy
Hi guys.
I have recently experienced some big problems with my Jimny when my engine started knocking, overheating and quickly seized after a local garage recommended, supplied and fitted an M15A VVT engine to my non VVT 2000 plate M13A Jimny. The garage will not accept any liability. Before I take the matter up with my local trading standards department does anyone know if it is in fact possible to do the above conversion without changing the ECU. What is the likely outcome of the engine change please? Seizure perhaps?
Many thanks in advance guys.

Please note after doing some more checking I have also noticed that when I switch on the ignition the engine management light no longer comes on! It definitely did light before the engine was changed. I am going to check the bulb as soon as I get chance... if it's still there!
I am uncovering more and more issues with this and am now determined to get to the bottom of it.

Sad to hear you are getting poor customer service Mate. As I have said before this garage is very local to me and I had considered getting them to fab a cage for me but who wants to give work to a garage that treats customers badly ?
All I can say is word gets round so Its worth treating customers properly.

I reckon this is an oddball case. My auld man just had a rear crossmember done on his 90 without an issue - even done some fault finding on a diesel/oil leak and an exhaust repair all done by the same garage... Im not saying either party is right or wrong - this is just to tell of my experience. The price he was charged has me planning a trip to them for a disc upgrade and stainless exhaust in the near future.
I hope you do get a resolution Mike, and that relations are made good again

This is very true Dave, I've always said if you do a good job your name will get passed on to one or two people but do a bad job and they will tell ten or twenty people.
As for fitting a vvt engine in a none vvt car I would hope any garage that knows anything about engines would know its not going to run properly as they run different engine management systems.
Yes it will run but not properly as the timing and fueling will be all over the place.
