Ok I have yet to do the maths for today's trip but outward seemed to be consistent with normal use so 20 odd but that was with a head wind. Return though seems very much better still. When I get more juice tomorrow I will calculate the total.

One of the conversation I was having yesterday was looking at improving the air flow over and round the cross bars as they are not ideal. Unfortunately I can't do without them as they get even more use than my trailers. I'm looking at xj Cherokee bars as they are much thinner and better shape feet.

Not sure changes to the cross bars, assuming we are talking roof rack, will make much improvement.
I removed my factory side rails and replaced with an adventure rack. It's got plenty of cross bars and an LED light bar adding drag, but I have MPG figures before and after for comparison. For me this change made no noticeable difference to the MPG figures. I am sure it has a little, but it's unnoticeable without scientific measuring equipment.Your MPG figure for motorway is on a par with mine, but only with my caravan on the back!  I get around 35 mpg on a long motorway run with the caravan, but I am limited to about 50-55mph due to the load.
it's impossible to compare however, different driving styles will change the figure. The biggest reduction I have seen is since I fitted the Stainless steel exhaust, am down about 2mpg during urban driving. The reason is I like the sound it makes, so tend to accelerate harder just to enjoy the noise. Just goes to show the biggest change you can make is the right foot.

Yokohama Geolanders, Sony head unit, NAUTILUS Air Horn, DRL conversion, Rear cargo space, Elvis Bobblehead, transfer Guard, Indian hanging Elephant, Koni Heavy track dampers, Custom SS exhaust, Voodoo Doll, Adventure Rack with LED ight bar, vintage ERIBA caravan usually attached (yes it's slow)

Don't forget we are not on a level playing field before we start as I have an automatic gearbox which immediately hamstrings my potential mpg. What is making me look at the bars is the fact that I get noise from them and given the design of the feet especially being pressed steel with plenty of turbulent edges it seems worthwhile seeing if any improvement could be made.
