Ok so bit of an odd one. It's intermittent/fixed itself possibly but it's almost like a brake is binding but they are free and are all working,at the mot they were within 10kg of 200 all round. But sometimes the car feels hesitant and needs to be driven? It's manifest itself at the petrol pump as some weeks being 16 mpg and other weeks as 23 or more, this being pottering around town, many short trips. Any thoughts?

The first thing I would do is take it for a reasonable drive and check for heat. Touch the centres of the wheels. Are they hot? Warm is pretty normal but they shouldn't be really hot. Reach underneath and feel the diffs and transfer box. Are any of them hot? They shouldn't be much above warm.

When I was last out out I did a cursory check like you suggested and everything was sensible, nothing too crazy?

Front discs are floating calipers, piston on one side and the whole caliper slides. These can (do) seize up and means you get brake binding. If it is only one one side, you might feel it pulling and you will see one of the pads worn.
They might free themselves off. If you take the wheel off, take the pads out, you should be able to move the caliper, it is usually a bit stiff, but should move by hand. If the caliper is siezed the pads are a real pain to get out.
The drums on the back might be binding, less common.
What about the handbrake, adjusted for the MOT and now sticking sometimes?

All good points and all in good condition as you might expect on a not yet 4 year old car with 18k.
