Dyl, a steel rope will be fine for what you want for some time as long as you take the right safety precautions, such as wearing good thick leather gloves to handle it, using a winch blanket and making sure everyone stands clear in case it snaps.
Having said that, synthetic rope is safer and having been near many a winch rope snapping I can tell you that they don't flail around like a wire rope and just recoil a bit in the line of the pull. Having been hit in the leg by one of these ropes I can assure you it did not have enough energy to hurt me. That had the full weight of a Land Rover 90 tray back on it.
Super Winch are a premium brand to an extent. So if you buy a Super Winch with their own rope on, you can be sure it's not rubbish.
For Green Laning you ought not need a winch, however, things happen. You'll barely ever use it. It's a get out of jail card, so why spend a fortune.
You need to think about what you are going to winch off of. There's unlikely to be a tree, so some type of ground anchor would be a good idea to carry. Pin types are light and don't take up as much space.
There's my point of view and 2 penneth worth.

Just like all the tyre vs lift questions

Remember that Super Winch winches are made in China as well as all other winches in that price range. Also the aforementioned Super Winch model is one of their budget winches. You can be sure that the synthetic rope on it is only a cheap Chinese rope. The pricetag says it all.

I've no problem with answering repeat questions Tom. It's this same argument about which winch is best where no one wants to give an inch or see the other person's point of view that keeps repeating its self I get bored of.
You are one of the main suspects in this refusing to see others points of view in as much as you won't accept that not everyone will find a Goodwinch the best winch for them. People don't all want a premium brand winch at a relatively high price when they may never use it.
Anyway, Goodwinches are just re branded Kingone winches with a bit of silicone sealant. They are made in China too. They are good quality but not all of the other Chinese winches are rubbish, which people have told you time after time from owning them themselves.
I try to give balanced advice according to people's needs from my experience, which is good on this subject as I've known people using most makes and models of winches in competition and seen the problems they experience.
Perhaps we could all just have a bit more of an open mind. I mean do you really think the synthetic rope on a Super Winch is going to be a load of rubbish? Not as good as Bow Rope perhaps but not bad though eh!

You are probably right there dear Sir, strapped to roof bars.

The quickest, no-fuss way to get a vehicle on its way is to strap it to another truck and give it a helping hand - an extension of this approach is your winch - you won't use it often when laning, but on occasion it's the quickest way of getting the group going again without any drama.
It's worth having as much recovery gear as is reasonably possible (and the knowledge of how to use it) - straps and shackles are your main friends and they are relatively inexpensive. A winch is an expensive addition to your recovery arsenal , but when that times comes when you need to use it, you'll be glad you have it although, as long as you're not daft enough to go out on your own, you'll get out of most situations with the help of another truck.
