Winch Recommendation was created by Dyl
I no nothing about winches so am looking for a bit of advice.

I want a winch for my Jimny that will fit on a winch plate mounted behind my existing bumper.

I'm looking for decent quality but doesn't need to be top end or overkill. I guess it needs to be quite compact.

I see some with cable and others with a synthetic top. Whats the pros and cons here?

thats a good price for a good winch with a synthetic rope

its much safer to have a synthetic rope than a wire one

if a wire rope breaks it can whip round and do serious damage to nearby people and vehicles, whereas a synthetic will just fall to the floor so much safer- it will also float in water

I don't like being anywhere near someone winching with a wire rope!!

Goodwinch Goldfish winches are brilliant , however with a synthetic rope you will pay over £700 for one unless you can find a second hand one

Just remember a couple of things.

Synthetic rope wears down long before wire rope does.
On a TDS 9.5 winch it is standard 9mm wire, more than enough to take the weight of the Jimny, and then some. So well maintained wire rope is not in any way more dangerous to use than synthetic rope. Of course if the wire rope breaks, it can be dangerous.

Also these very cheap winches that use synthetic rope. I very much doubt that the rope is anything quality made. Most likely chinese. NOT at all the same quality as Dyneema SK75 or similar plasma rope.
