Thanks guys, this is the m13a dohc engine, it has two lumps so i guess two cats (miaow) truth is
that it glowed red hot in two spots, one after the first one and one before the scone, maybe
the cat broke on delivery to me (engine was).
and messed up the second one (brand new) hopefully you are all right I can take the first of the old engine and replace
to the new with the lambda sensor, and if I'm lucky (sometimes am) than I can still save the second one too.

I was worried because you know you put an unknown engine in and you kind of expect weird things to happen,
its the right engine and all the harness bits meet properly, but there are some many little things you think, what may happen if you missed one (don't think I did).
I will report once i get a moment to sort it out, is it safe to drive without the honey comb mesh, I mean I know it may smell some but can it harm anything, mot is long due....

Thanks for all the replies, And thanks for ray too, which have be a life saver with getting our suspension sorted earlier this year.

Cant for the life of me think what can be making manifold get that hot unless there is some ridiculous amount of unburnt fuel getting into it and burning but that fuel would have to have passed accross the cylinders and if that much engine just wouldnt run

daft question this but apart from the cats glowing red does the thing run OK or is it coughing and spluttering, low on power or anything?

if its running fine then its a real curios one since any of the possibles already mentioned would cause it to run rough

even though there is a chain its still possible to get it a tooth out on one or both cams.. if timing is wrong then fuel could be igniting inside the exhaust and the first victim is likely to be the cat..

but again it would be running rough.. Or you have a TURBO :)
