215 75 tyres on 7x15 rims

I did have 225/70s on 7x15 steel wheels not long ago (which cleared nicely) and doing the math it comes out at 157.5mm of tyre whereas the 215/75 has 161.125mm of tyre. So that means there is about 4mm more meat.
The alloys currently have 205/70s which on a new tyre should give 143mm of meat but they are well worn out.
So what I need to know is what effect the wider wheel with the greater offset will have. I can't get my head round it.
Will the wider rim make the tyre have less height by spreading the walls?
Will the greater offset not make any difference as the wheel will simply be a few cms farther along the axis of turn making the tyres more likely to clip the arches or liners?

Yes, it makes it more likely to rub to somewhere if there's already small clearance, but I don't think there will be any problems though.helijohn wrote: Will the greater offset not make any difference as the wheel will simply be a few cms farther along the axis of turn making the tyres more likely to clip the arches or liners?
When my jimny was standard, I put some 205/70/15 Insa Special Tracks(remoulds, so they are a bit bigger) on it with some 7" wide offset rims, and I just had to remove the front mud flaps to make enough clearance for them to turn nicely.

I just whipped on one of the 7x15s on the front and the nearest the tyre comes to anything anywhere is 35mm at the back and 25mm at the front. The tyre has 3mm tread left so I am guessing about to add 6mm for a new tyre then add 18mm for the 215/75 and it makes 24mm. It's all sums and theory at the moment and in reality it could be anything.

I was wondering if a 215 15 on my 7x15 rims will fit in standard spec. as some tyres just come as 215 15!Paul4x4 wrote: When my jimny was standard, I put some 205/70/15 Insa Special Tracks(remoulds, so they are a bit bigger) on it with some 7" wide offset rims, and I just had to remove the front mud flaps to make enough clearance for them to turn nicely.

i'm pretty sure 215-15 is the same as 215-80r15 which i dont believe fit a standard car without chopping it

I tend to agree that they are 80s. I tried Googling it and I found all sorts but this about 80s just wasn't there.

I was hoping that on a 7x15 rim they would just fit but I can't go buying tyres on a hope and a prayer. I know 225 70s on 7x15 fit easily but we are talking 15mm more.
