The drivers manual gives some misleading information so nothing new there. If you tow with the front wheels suspended and the rear wheels on the road the spinning axle shafts will lubricate the diff. gears so no problem there. The rear prop will turn and that will turn the innards of the T box and that will churn the oil so no problem there. As the Gen.4 does not have a neutral in the T.box drive will go back to the main g/box. Here you may have a problem. If you have an auto you can forget it as autos don't like being towed. If things have changed then now is the time to speak !!!
Back to the main speak. OK you have a manual, that's good, put it in neutral, T.box in 4 high and off you go.
Except Suzuki say you can't do that for any distance and it may be because the electronics don't understand why the front wheels are not being driven but the rear ones are!
I used to "A" frame my SJ to trials events but I had a neutral in the T.box and no fancy electronics.
My strong suggestion is that you communicate with Suzuki direct and be very explicit about what you want to do. Pages 7-6 to 7-8 in the drivers handbook show what you can and can't do but do not explain fully why.

I was led to believe that it was because only the forward face of the teeth of the diff etc are fully hardened and machined to mesh, the reverse face is not. Therefore there is a very high rate of wear when the wheels drive the gear train.

No idea if it's true

I fitted solid flanges to the hubs on my LC so that the front drive shafts and diff. were being driven all the time but not in drive mode but in over-run mode ie on the reverse face of the gears. I ran it this way for 120,000 miles with no adverse effects.

That does not sound right. You use the back face when engine braking and when reversing. I can't see the diff caring much about being towed.
