The flat side facing out the lip facing into the gearbox. A trick to get the old seal out is to drill in two wood scerws into the old seal and pull out gently with a pliers. like this

Not a great vid but you get the idea

I just found this video and it looks like it's the other way around in this video?
He has the flat side facing toward gearbox and the lip facing out towards the prop shaft?

Unless he had it installed wrong?
