In 4x4 for 20 miles if it was actually in 4x4 would have wound up so much that you wouldn't be able to steer shortly before making a very loud bang. It's more likely if it drove that far with the light on that it's an electrical fault or switch failure. 20 miles on tarmac would be some serious symptoms.

It was making some very horrible noises on the way home, So either it was in 4wd or it was in 2wd but the hubs locked. Since i have now fitted manual hubs that can no longer be the case. also I have jacked up a wheel and the front prop is being driven so definitely stuck in 4wd. The only difference before I changed the hubs the 4wd light was out, now its permanently flashing.

Would it be simpler just to change the transfer box to a stick shift one from an older jimny
Has anyone done that? How difficult is it?

The switch I mentioned is the one in the transfer box not the cabin. Swap the manual isn't difficult physically but the ratios are different so it will go from 1:1 to 1.3:1 in high range so will require other alterations to the rest of the transmission to accommodate. Or some bigger tyres.
