I checked the FSM in Section 7A for the manual transmission and there does not appear to be anything that could be missing.
Have you tried to manually actuate the back up lights with the switch removed from the transmission and plugged in ?

i have taken the switch off for the third time, and all works from the switch up, ie pushing the small ball bearing the lights come on, put it in gearbox in doesnt??? i,m wondering if the small ball bearing isnt protruding enough? thats the only thing i can think of now. my plan b was to cut the wires from the switch and run it inside, and have a switch inside.then wire a spotlight on the roof running wires from the existing reversing lights, would this work ? where would be the best place to bring the wire inside ? anyone a good idea? up under gear stick or through with wiring loom? cheers Liam.

Err possible. Until very recently reverse lights were not part of the mot but according to my tester the most recent revisions that and fogs plus a few other little bits are becoming tested.
