Hi all, and a Happy New Year.
I have owned my Jimny for a couple of months now and absolutely love it. We live in Somerset and have just sited our caravan on a site in Devon for 12 months. Because the lanes down there are so narrow and sometimes muddy we decided a Jimny would be the perfect vehicle for our weekends away. Now to my question, I have no intention of taking the Jimny offroad so will rarely, if at all, need to use the 4 wheel drive. Do I need to use the 4 wheel drive periodically to keep everything working or can I just forget it and it will work when (or if) I ever need it. Thanks.
P.S. It's a 2004 with stick, not button, for 4WD if that makes any difference.

even though its "stick" it would be best to pop it in 4WD occasionally to check the vacuum system works. Otherwise the first time you use it it will fail.

Yes regular use seems to be best. I think a lot of people's problems with the 4wd system are due to it being used so infrequently.

one of the problems I had with my jimny 4wd was that the solenoids that control the vacuum pressure had seized, probably due to infrequent use. I managed to get them moving with a bathing in plusgas/wd40.

You can prove your 4wd works when stationary. When you engage 4WD, you should hear the front hubs click in. when engaged, if you jack the front sides up whilst the jimny is in gear, each side of the front axle shouldn't move. Also, when you disengage, you can prove that both sides of the front axle have disengaged by moving freely. Last thing you want to do is get stuck in boggy ground with no 4wd (like I have).
