Non use of 4 wheel drive.

Only if the wheels try to rotate at different speeds, they won't if you stick to a straight line on a smooth level road and all the tyres have the same diameter (same tread, correct pressures)
Probably be good for the seals to rotate the shafts and splash a bit of oil around
If you are worried, do it on a gravel road, but don't drive through the gravel down the centre of a tarmaced road, or near the curb, as that is where all the screws & nails end up, and you will get a puncture. (This is the real reason you avoid cross hatching even though you can drive on the broken ones, most people think you can't so that bit of the road doesn't get swept by tyres to pick up the debris)
If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

Another top tip. Thanks to everyone for being so patient with a newbie. Class 1 HGV driver but never had a 4WD car.
