Just click it into 4wd for 100yds or so on a straight bit of road once in a while. No need to go out of your way to find some mud.

Thanks. I thought I'd read that might cause the transmission to wind up. Is that only if you use 4WD on firm ground for extended periods?

All you need do is every week or so, before you switch off crack the window open and turn the wireless off, pull the lever back to 4wd, and listen for the click, click , count to 5* and push it back, listening for the clack, clack. count to 5 and put back in 4wd.

Do this half a dozen times, but on the last go, leave it in 4wd for 30 seconds or so, and check the green light stays steady, then put back in 2wd and switch off. (wind the window up first)

Keeps the solenoid valves from sticking, and smears the grease on the hub splines a bit.

* give the engine a chance to keep the vacuum tank empty (or full of vacuum)

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

Great general advice on this thread to all the newbies. Duly noted, something I will also do regularly now.

Happy New Year All :) :)

Not if done for a short time in a straight line (unless you've done something silly like fit different size tyres front to back).
