Jimny still overheating head gasket done ? was created by Johntom
Hi
My 2003 Jimny DOHC used water for a while, no signs of a leak etc. It progressed to needing water every week so I added some 'steel seal' as I suspected the head gasket was letting coolant onto the Pistons (no external leak, steamy exhaust, fumes in coolant, no oil contamination). Immediately after adding the steel seal and letting it tick over for 1 hour as per instructions, I took the car for a drive and it started to over heat and the heated no longer worked !
Since then I have changed the thermostat, and then removed it, then changed the radiator cap but nothing changed, it ticks over ok but when driven the temp needle climbs...
I have just bit the bullet and replaced the head gasket along with the radiator, new cap and the thermostat (the water pump is only 6 months old), I have filled it up took it round the block and the temperature gauge still climbs as before !!
I have just parked it on a steep drive, on ramps, nose up, radiator cap off and squeezed the top, bottom and 2 heater hoses but still the same although there is some sign off heat from the heater?
The top hose is hot, the bottom one is cold, the top heater hose is very hot, the bottom heater hose is warm but not as hot?
Any ideas, please help

Did you have the heater on hot when you refilled the coolant?
The last component in the cooling system is the viscous fan. The failure of this will not explain the cold hose when fully up to temperature though and I'm at a loss after that. You've replaced everything else.
To my mind it sounds like an air lock.

Hi yes I had the heater on full and the fan on. There is some sign of heat but it's not hot. I wonder if the steel seal had blocked something as it didn't over heat until that was added?

You could be onto something there. I'm not sure how to get to the bottom of that.

K seal, steel seal any sort of head gasket repair additive is nasty stuff, couple of months back i changed an engine on a golf,it had had k seal put in for a leaky water pump, that combined with a rusty water mix for coolant caused a massive blockage and overheated the engine to the point it was knackered we had to flush everything pipes rad matrix the lott and it took ages.
from what you have said id start by checking make sure there's nothing blocked.

Hi, as gaz3359 said, any form of additive like that is nasty stuff, and usually the first thing it blocks is the heater matrix, i've changed loads because of it !!. It can also block narrow coolant pipes and waterways in the engine so as gaz says , try a full flush of the entire cooling/ heating system
