There is a bearing in the water pump you can feel for play in by wiggling the pulley on it with no belt on it.

I've heard of the tensioner bearing failing but can't see why that would cause a belt to snap.

The tensioner bearing makes some really crazy noises before it fails, so you would have heard something by now if it was on its way out.

kirkynut and Busta. The tensioner is on the power steering belt not the alternator and the bearing in that is fine. As mentioned I checked the water pump and alternator bearings and they are fine. According to James(j999pre) who knows his Jimnys the belts are different on the single cam(g13bb) compared to the dual cam(m13a) engines. Luckily the belts I have been fitting to the m13a engine has been the correct one. Gates 4PK850. Its power steering uses a Gates 4pk830. The single cam uses a gates 4pk813 on both systems.

Replaced the crankshaft pulley a couple of months ago and now seems all OK.

Be careful as this is not 100% correct, by far and away the most common belt I have sold is the 4PK835 which you do not even mention.

I got the info from a firm called "Japanese 4x4 spares ltd" who mentioned the OE length plus or minus 5mm is the norm. So what is the 4pk835 intended to fit as it is away off the 4pk813 used on the g13bb engine according to them?
