I don't think there's a need. I copes quite well I thought.

If needs be, perhaps give it a slightly bigger battery but the alternator does a good job and I don't hear of them failing. They are easy to get second hand also.

Mine seized solid on Saturday.
Freed up when I took it off

Turns out that the stator rusts through, starts to fall apart and pieces jam up the works, attracted by the rotor when it is working.

Quite common with older units apparently.
Electrically they are fine

Fitted a new one, rather than another 15 year old one that will shortly do the same.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

I think it had a right to die after 15 years and how many miles?

Hardly any really, I reckon it can't have done much more than 140,000 (speedo was replaced (clocked more likely) and lost a lot of miles 2 years before I got it).

Nothing lasts nowadays

Ah yeah, fancy an alternator only lasting 140000 miles! I'd write a strongly worded letter to Suzuki Customer Services to be honest!
