Im a big fan of the isuzu 1.7td I think it's a great motor after having a couple in the past if money was no object id fit one to the jimny but for me the m16a was a more feasible swap it literally cost me nothing to do but time, once id weighed in the remains of the liana and solda few bits.and I have no complaints either good power increase over the 1.3 well worth doing imo.
to note my jimny with the 1.6 standard axles 410 box 235 75 15 saharas does 55mph at 3500 rpm.small bit of input for you's

I've got one of those in the shed. It's in a 106 Rallye track car though. Great engine, surprisingly torquey with an awesome top end.
I'd also wondered about a Rover K-series. 160hp if you get an MG one, very light, rwd bellhousing easily available, lots of mods, turbo kits etc available and easy to get hold of. Cheap because everyone is scared of the head gasket going, but lots of fixes available for that little issue.

Yeah gearboxes and driveshafts are a pain. I'm on my 3rd gearbox. This one whines like crazy but seems to be holding out.
