Is this oil ok? was created by Ruby2
Hi All
Not had my Jimny long, but it's due a service.
I have read on the forum info page that 10W 30 is the correct oil? However I am having trouble finding it.
So... I phoned Suzuki who advised 5W 30.
I've purchase this grade (see pic) but on purchasing the oil the motor factors stated they listed 10W 40
Please can anyone advise if this is ok to use

Cheers for that Dan.
Looks as though that 5W 30 doesn't go as high up the temperature range. I can see that 10W 40 has a better spread closer to the 10W 30 that's preferred.
Thanks Dan

AH HA!
I might have answered my own question here.
Just found a similar chart in my handbook and it mirrors what the Suzuki parts chap said.
So stick to 5w 30 then?
I'll check the can has the SG,SJ,SL,SH rating tomorrow when I get to work.
Do you agree?

Do you mention the age of the Jimny somewhere? You may want to take that into account of course.
On that chart the 10/30 takes you to 30°C which is not a regular temperature where I am but I get more than 10° pretty often. The low end of the rating gives the cold thickness of the oil so it will be runny at -30° if using the 5/30 but do you need that.
TBH I think protection at around 15°C is more useful than protection at -30° but that's just me.
I have found that the 5/30 oils are a bit costly, tend to come in smaller cans and for my old banger it is not cost effective especially as a can of 10/30 is 20 notes.

The oil is an A5 B5 oil that is a great spec for a Jimny as it has both friction reduction additives to reduce fuel consumption and the latest anti wear additives. So use it.
The 10W/30 recommendation from the G16 engine manual is just daft. That is a what used to be available in the states in the 1990's when the 5W/30 oil used to shear to a 5W/20 grade but with modern oils that is no longer a problem.
Therefore the only thing a 10W/30 oil does is to use more fuel in the first few minutes in the winter than a 5W/30. As soon as the engine is up to tempreture it makes no difference.
There is virtually no availability of 10W/30 in the UK. It is still available in the states.
