On the 8th Day God made the LandRover -
On the 9th day he swapped it for a Jimny.

Running 2h on the road with the hubs manually locked is fine just don't engage 4h on the road or a grippy surface.

Don't know if you saw my previous reply, but you could apply some Instant Gaskit (you can get this from Halfrauds) on the vacuum hub where it mates with the wheel hub. It will stop the water from coming in. It will make it a bit of a pain when you need to take the hub off to do things like king pins or wheel bearings but if you are going through lots of water then I would say its worth it.
For the avoidance of doubt, its this (marked in yellow - excuse my rubbish drawing skillz!):

I took the hubs off and found they were absolutely full of brown stinky water and general muck so I cleaned them and pulled the sliding collar into place. Once refitted I jacked all four wheels off the ground and they were spinning once again with 4WD engaged, so I felt I'd had a small success as at least I now know what is going on!

If the vac pipes come off the back of the hub water will get in there, think that's what happened to mine.

Oh yeah thanks GuardianAngel I bought some instant gasket today so I'll chuck some on tomorrow and see if it makes a difference...worth a go for £3!

Well, to revive an old topic (perhaps all vacuum 4x4 problems should be merged into one): I've been hit by the 4x4 not engaging bug (2007 Jimny, so vacuum hubs).
Instead of the familiar "clack", I get a whooshing sound (like an air leak) and the green 4x4 light flashes just once. I was wondering: does the number of green light flashes indicate the faulty subsystem ? something like 1 for vacuum 2 for electrical etc ?
If not, here I go in checking the whole thing (engine bay hoses + filter seem ok) with Martin's guide.

Hi all, quick question
I've got the usual problems with vac system, I have took hubs off and manually Locked them, works great, can I leave it like that and disengage the 4x4 with the transfer box lever when not required or does it not work like that...
Thanks
Ian
