No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationNo eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationNo it's a definate bearing type of noise which wasn't there before.
The problem with keeping on driving it is that if the bearing does go you have to start looking at gears and shaft damage so I'd rather get it sorted before that happens.
This was my retirement car and my finances are limited on a state pension.
A bearing and seal repair kit is available on ebay for ã120 so assuming that's all it needs it won't be too bad.
I've had a silly quote of ã275 just to remove the gearbox with "we'll have to look at it before we can quote for the gearbox repair itself" type thing.
I don't want to get stuck in the situation where the gearbox is out and stripped and then can't afford to repair it.
If it's going to cost ã1000 with labour I might as well get a Cam Suzuki recon gearbox.
Trouble is they are exchange so I need to get the box out ready to send the old one back at the same time.
I've never stripped a gearbox before so I don't know if it needs any special tools/pullers etc otherwise I'd just get the kit and have a go after getting the box out lol
Martin had to have some gears as well as,I believe, his gearbox collapsed, so his cost inc fitting was app the same cost as the Cam Suzuki box without labour.
I've sent out loads of enquiries so after the holiday weekend I might get some decent quotes
If someone in my area with a large workshop could assist ,and doesn't mind my car sitting there, I would have no problem lending a hand.

Problem is the VVT box is like hens teeth when it comes to finding a good used one.
Last one I saw on ebay was £650 !! And then you might still have the same problem.
I wouldn't ignore a wheel bearing noise so why ignore a similar noise in the gearbox especially if ultimately it'll cause more damage??
It's ok if you have a non VVT as the boxes are cheap, more reliable and plentiful because they don't break.
This isn't just a "whine" it's a definate worn bearing noise so if it breaks up the gear teeth will jump and add to the cost.

Coming from a background with fast Peugeots, if you swapped the gearbox as soon as it made a bad noise you'd need a new one every 5k. Ignore the noise and they might last another 40k.
I hope you find someone to help you out. The cost of removal and refitting is the worst bit, and is the same whether you are just replacing a couple of bearings or replacing the whole box. If you go the KAM recon route, you might as well keep driving until it at least gets significantly worse. No point sending them a nearly new 'box as an exchange!

Had 2 quotes today .
One from a breakers
£534 inc delivery and VAT (don't think so lol)
The other from a local garage although it's more of an estimate £560 to remove/refit and repair.
That's more like it although I've not spoken to them yet to firm up the price.
I'll have a new clutch and rear mounting as well so that's bound to be app £100 extra.
Not bad though!!

I've decided to go with the local garage at £560 all in although there may be further problems/cost when they open it up.
