I wonder is it from using pressure washers, many people use them after mud runs.. perhaps the mastic seams are dislodged or broken down by them.

BGBrit.

What does it look like underneath the bit you are painting? I am not a fan of hammerite it use to be good stuff but was bought out and like so many products does not seem to contain the "good stuff" it once did, the sub frames on my last car I stripped and sprayed with epoxy mastic (brushes on too) and that appears to hold up well and was good as far as not being damaged easily when reassembling things, got it off Ebay Rust busters epoxy mastic. Underneath my Jimny I intend to wait until next summer when hopefully we will have a long hot summer! and I want to wire brush underneath and paint with waxoyl underseal (it is a mix of wax and underseal) then I use a small pump action bottle(like you get for less than £1 to mist plants) with some cavity wax to wax everywhere hoping the wax will creep into all the places not easily seen, unfortunately the only real way to deal with rust is to cut it out and weld new in.
