In the "old days" you would have had to strip and decoke the head, re seat the valves and possibly skim the head by now. Carb strip and rebuild etc etc.

yes martin, but the point is,you could do it yourself,at reasonable cost, try doing that today with all the electronic computers and all the rest of it,thats assuming there are any people left who would be capable of doing it,this forum excepted, most wouldn't even want to get their hands dirty, points, plugs, carburettors.all could be serviced at home without the ridiculous expense involved with todays cars, that is the whole point, and one which you seem to have missed.snd the facts don't bear out what you say,I have lost count of the posts on this, and other Susuki forums regarding gearboxes, and crankshaft pulleys alone,One owner had reolaced 2 pulleys in 2 years, and said that a 3rd one was on the cards. No way would that have happened with the old cars, cos they wouldn't have had such a stupid design in the first place, and if such a pulley is needed to dampen out vibration which may damage the crankshaft,it doesn't say much for the quality of the engineering and design of the engine does it.Come on people, take off the rose tinted glasses.

If you don,t like your jimny, sell it !!. As modern cars go now they are still relatively easy to work on and repair. We all own a jimny because we want to and as such accept their weak points and deal with them as required, what we don't do is come onto an enthusiasts forum and start slagging them off !!

Well, my Oct 2000 build Santana Jimny has 425,168 k's on the clock and is still going strong. It has had very few parts replaced in those 15 years.
#1 A cam angle sensor
#2 Heater Core
#3 Complete rear axle assembly due to my speeding over a hill and coming down on a rock and smashing rear. Hardly the Jimny's fault.
#4 Canvas roof replace. My choice, the roof wasn't stuffed, I just felt like a change. Went for Fastback design for several years.
#5 Head went after over 400,000 k's.
#6 Exhaust system replaced with 2" system, 100CPSI Cat, Extractors, Snorkel with Pre-Filter.

The only other parts have been plugs n oil and seals and bearings, the normal wear items. I changed the Uni joints to greasable ones and grease after every water crossing. Check the diffs etc after every water crossing. Put new white roofs on this summer just for a change. Replaced the headlights and spotlights with LED's which are just BRILLIANT.

I would say that the Jimny owes me nothing, takes me everywhere and still puts a smile on my dial when I start it up. From new until now It has been utterly reliable, a pleasure to drive, goes off-road daily in my job as dozer, earthmoving equipment operator. Takes me on 2-3 5,000k trips every year, often with small boat, sailboat or motor, in tow.

think that rather proves my point, what you are saying,is if anyone dares to pass an opinion that differs from the rest of you, thay are not welcome on the site, not only rose tinted, but bigoted as well, so much for a valid and frank discussion, that explains why people spend vast sums of moneyon repairs, rather then face facts. Some Jimnys may well have done big mileages without many problems, but in the main, they seem to be pre 2005 ,so maybe the problems are confined to the later models, and I didn't sat I didn't like the car, what I said was,I don't they are as reliable as people say,or is it that owners just don't like admitting that?? I have to have a reliable car to get to work, its not just an off road plaything,or a second car,so its looking as though it will have to go,finally,if you cant take opinions different to your own, then why bother coming on the chat section in the first place?next stop, we buy any car!!!
