I'm in a similar situation of not being sure what winch I want, or wether I want one at all.
I've decided that I'm going to buy the Goodwinch 'winch in a box' kit. It's a 4000lb winch that can attach to any towball or you can hook it onto a recovery point. It comes with a wiring harness or you just put leads straight onto the battery. You can use it on a trailer, a car, truck or whatever. This extra versatility and security compared to a winch permanently attached to the front of a vehicle makes a lot more sense for me.
The only experience I have with winches is the 10-ton forestry sort or 500kg hand winches on trailers, but I'm fairly sure that anyone with common sense could un-stuck a jimny with a lot less than 9500lb!

I'm selling this at the moment... winch plate should take a 6k winch and has been made to accommodate a short drum rock 98 or similar..
KAP trim, skid plate and winch plate
