You don't want any power cable going anywhere that is not fused or switched, through the bulkhead or not, secured well or not. Given the size of the required live cable to a winch, we generally don't fuse it, so it has to be switched. The solenoid is a type of switch to switch the motor, it doesn't prevent the live that feeds the motor being there.
You're mad if you don't have an isolator on your winch wiring, isolating the live from the battery to the winch. As Mark says, as close to the battery as possible so there is the least amount of cable running a live that isn't switched.

And in your opinion the sw60 albright solenoid isn't sufficient to isolate the live when not being used ? Not a trick question just so I know. As I am wiring my set up on the advice of another member ?

I completely understand where your coming from Kirknut that's why I have been working on this before I connect to the battery, as a fail safe.
But I wil be putting another Albright solenoid type, that can cut the main feed to the winch via a 5amp switch on the dash. My winch also came with a big fuse which will also be in the equation.

No, if water gets in to to Allbright or switches etc, or the Allbright goes wrong, the winch will operate by it's self. It happened to a friend during the break at a challenge event and the winch pulled his car apart and crushed his cage (made from woefully thin tube). So it happens. Not if it's isolated & off and neither can an elecetrickery fire if there's no elecetrickery!
