Unless I am doing a long journey (to save fuel) then I leave them on, that way I can "accidentally" go down a green lane whilst generally out and about
Yes, the ones in the eBay link are the same type I have and I suspect most others as well

I used to mount mine to my old Thule roof rack with ratchet straps holding them down and some vinyl padding to stop them wearing through the ratchet straps as they are by their nature quite course.
I now have them mounted on the roof of my cage with a big nut and bolt clamp affair.
The price in that eBay link is incredibly cheap!

thats the thing i never know when i might pop out for abit of laning but dont want some d#*$ to steal them off my roof!!
yea it is cheap and they do cheaper ones which are not quite as long.
was thinking of using THESE and just cutting the thread down to just long enough, and maybe flatten the "wing nut" abit. id put the waffle boards next to each other with the clamps in between, then i can lock them on and less fiddly to get off when needed as its only 2 nuts to undo

Those ladder mount things may work but are designed for lightweight ally ladders, not heavy waffle boards. I'd leave the thread quite long and have a metal disc to put between the nut part and the waffle board so you are not trying to do it up to a rough waffle board.
Here are mine - I know they are mounted on a cage but you could do similar to roof bars:
These things are bloody heavy, even before the squares get filled with mud. You need to wear gloves if you are going to handle them much too as they are quite rough and will make your hands sore.
They are also bloody handy on occasions too though.
The short ones may be too short to be of any real use and they are not nice or easy to cut down if too long, so consider the length and how you will carry them carefully.
I have a section of old winch rope tied through the end of each of mine. That way I can winch them out of the quagmire they are left in after I've driven over them, or tow them out.

the waffles weigh 7.5kg according to the add, not sure if thats each or combined. even if thats combined its still less than the ladders i carry on my jim daily using those ladder clamps.
i think you may be confused with how they work (not trying to insult your intelligence here), the hook obviously goes round the roof rack so the thread points up through the waffle board, next the box section piece slides over the thread onto the top of the waffle board/ladder, the wingnut is then tightened onto the box section. you can then put a padlock through the hole which secures the wingnut from being undone.
the threaded part is only that long so you can clamp 3 section ladders with them.
been using that type of ladder clamp for years never had them come loose EVER.
i did think a meter isnt very long which is why i thought id see what everyones opinion is.
i had thought about putting rope through them so you can find them in the mud!!

I have been advised to tie them to the back of the Jimny, so when you have got out of the hole, you can drag them along behind without having to stop.
Of course stopping means you run the risk of getting bogged down again.
