I think short of a winch they've gotta be the most usefull tool for self recovery along with a spade.you can always use tree branches etc to construct natural waffle boards or "brush mats" as i think there known ;)

id go with ladder clamps as i suggested, u blots require 2 wing nuts per u bolt so your gonna find yourself undoing atleast 4 fiddly nuts to get them off the roof, this is not gonna be fun when its freezing and snowing or raining!ladder clamps take 30seconds to take off AND you can lock them:whistle:

when i finaly get some i will use ladder clamps to attach them, as i want to mount the waffle boards side by side on my roof rack im planning on putting the clamps between the 2 boards so the box section bit of the clamp holds both waffle boards, one at the front one at the back.the stubs on the bottom of the ladder clamps will stop the boards moving sideway out from under the clamps. if the box section bits dont stick out far enough across the waffle boards ill get some longer box section and custom make them.
