will rule out the door catch and hinges at least and probably help you get closer to locating the sound source.

that's what I'd try anyway.

I'll try that, I did put tape on the door catch with no luck but according to my assistant the sound is defo coming from the hinge side. I even thought it might be the petrol flap but this noise is heavier sounding. It is just like an exhaust pipe catching the chassis.

Think I might have found it. The exhaust mounts for the rear box, well one of them. The rubber slips on to a chassis pin and that seems by feel to have been catching somehow. I threw some rubber spray on it and the noise dropped by 60%. Question is what can I use to silence it permanently - assuming it is the culprit?

Nope, still got the damn knock. :angry:

Now then, if this is caused by the door hinges having very slight vertical play how can I check it without resorting to door removal?

strap around the door (top-bottom), then strap onto that strap onto roofrail ?

or strap onto that strap onto towbar

depends on whether you want to keep it up or keep it down

or maybe both - keep it in the middle :laugh:

Great suggestions. I can strap a strap to the door but then:
1. I don't have a towbar
2. The rear roof spoiler might prevent a strap going to the roof rails.
