In The Olden Days I just used to hold the driveshaft upright in one hand, and whack the joint down with a mallet and they would fly off. (usually missing the carefully positioned cardboard box- good job I'm not a bomber pilot)

You can substitute 6 ball for 8 ball.
Top up the oil if it is low. There won't be any damage to the diff unless it has been run completely dry.
Slap some paint on the swivels if you are precious, but rusty and pitted is fine.

I need to change 8 ball 29 spline to 6 ball 19 spline ideally as they are easier to get hold of and at this rate I'll be getting through quite a few!

Why not get some uprated ones. Cheaper than buying standard shafts and CV's all the time.

The number of balls on a CV is not the problem, it's the number of splines.
As I replaced my "rare type" CV recently, I also wrote all of my findings in this forum topic:
www.bigjimny.com/index.php/forum?view=to...8805&start=12#163839
It contains all information, including availability.
About switching to a different CV: You can't switch to a different type unless you change halfshafts as well, and perhaps the differential too?

No matter what. There's no need to swap the entire differential.
Only reason this may be needed is if you swap shafts for 26 spline uprated ones. But there are also 22 spline uprated shafts available.
