98 Jimny Steering box rebuilding and kit. was created by Jim Jim
Hi Mates,
Has anyone here ever rebuilt a power steering box for the Gen 3 Jimny? If so, do you know where I can source the seals and probably the rebuild procedure please?
Thanks.

I am seeing many kits online but they all have varying seals, not sure which is the correct kit.

I wouldn't know beyond asking Martin if he can get one, the last one I had any dealing with was a defender one and then I sent it to a specialist, can't remember who though off the top of my head.

As the steering box is considered to be "whole unit replacement" and the cost is very high then I cannot really help here unless you do want a brand new unit.
I would guess a specialist could refurb it and a seals kit could also help. You will find that most of the seals on things like this are pretty standard and a box of "assorted O rings" will often do it.

Hi Lambert, sorry for the delayed reply. I had my Defender steering box rebuilt too and believe that the Jimny cant be complicated either.

Hello mlines,
Thanks for the reply too and sorry about my late reply. I am very far from the UK and shipping to and from to have it rebuilt will be costly and the customs hassle here might be another issue.
There are companies who sell rebuilt ones with a core return but again only in the UK. Looking at the seals in the kits advertised and having opened up mine a bit already, I cant see them being difficult to rebuild/reseal.
I think I will dismantle it altogether and then compare seals with what's online to find the right kit. For some reason I have not found anyone who attempted to rebuild these steering boxes apart from companies. Not sure if "specialized" tools are needed but cant see that being the case either.
Thanks for the replies and have a great day.
