With the better weather I've managed to have a good look and listen to what's going on with the screech.

The belt PS belt was loose, so I've tightened that up. Screech is still there though.

Listening closely, it's coming from the alternator pulley.

What's the solution here? Replace the alternator? Or just the pulley bearing?

Whatever is the cheapest, then if that fixes it you have won. If not then at least both will have been replaced with good known items.

if you have any black dust around the fan area or on the end of the alternator then its definitely a loose fan belt i had to lever the alternator out with a bar to get it tight enough to stop the major squealing . it has to be really tight, i think v belts grip better than these multi groove belts as i never had to get it that tight on other vehicles ,but as said before there is still a slight bit now and then on acceleration.

There is loads of black dust / gunk on the front of the alternator. Will have a go at tightening the alternator tomorrow, thanks for that.

Managed to get rid of the squeal.

It turned out to be the alternator belt that was not tight enough.

I had checked this previously, but disregarded it because it felt pretty tight (could only barely get it to twist 90 degrees). Got a bar in there and gave it some oomph and managed to slide it a further 2-3cm before tightening back up.

Result!

Yes the longer we have these vehicles the more we understand them, they have quite a few quirks.
