The tensioners can make some funny noises as the bearings dry out, but without showing any play in the bearing.

What you need is a long screwdriver to use as a stethoscope, with the engine running carefully rest the end of the screwdriver on the body of each component with a pulley such that it won't catch on the moving part and then put your ear of preference on the handle of the screwdriver, if it screams when you touch your ear then that's your problem. You will need a very long screwdriver and you have to be really really really careful but you can isolate the noise this way.

If you do not feel confident to do the above safely DON'T DO IT, take the car to a qualified technicians for diagnosis.

I in no way accept any liability for any personal injury incurred by you doing any of the above , proceed with caution at your own risk.

Busta, that sounds like a strong possibility and an easy check to do. I do remember squirting WD40 on things last time I changed the belt and I'm not sure if that's done anything to mess up the bearing in the tensioner. I have an M13 engine, do you know if it's possible to push the bearings out of these and pop in a new one is it a throwaway part?

I did try this, but didn't get a conclusive result. I'm reasonably handy with the wrench, but my mechanical ear isn't finely tuned to rattles and clanks. I agree, safety first as always.

Yes the bearing is a standard size and can easily be pressed out and replaced. I got a replacement from my friendly local bearing suppliers.

When mine went it made a strange noise and was not immediately obvious that it was the pulley.

Thanks Busta,

There's a bearing place nearby me, I think I'll invest in one of those as I've got access to a press.
