Busta, that sounds like a strong possibility and an easy check to do. I do remember squirting WD40 on things last time I changed the belt and I'm not sure if that's done anything to mess up the bearing in the tensioner. I have an M13 engine, do you know if it's possible to push the bearings out of these and pop in a new one is it a throwaway part?

I did try this, but didn't get a conclusive result. I'm reasonably handy with the wrench, but my mechanical ear isn't finely tuned to rattles and clanks. I agree, safety first as always.

Yes the bearing is a standard size and can easily be pressed out and replaced. I got a replacement from my friendly local bearing suppliers.
When mine went it made a strange noise and was not immediately obvious that it was the pulley.

There's a bearing place nearby me, I think I'll invest in one of those as I've got access to a press.
