ok, so last night when driving home, I heard a screech, the engine laboured a little and when I looked at the dash I seen the dreaded battery light and caution light glowing. They went off after the screeching stopped, which was nice to see. However, the next corner I took, I felt the steering heavy as hell. Turned out that the power streering and air con belt had snapped, which was a relief. So, this morning, I popped the bonnet and started the engine and the rattly noise was still happening. Located the source and it turns out to be the water pump bearing. So I'm guessing it will need a new water pump as I doubt you can press and refit a bearing on the water pump. Probably worth just getting a new one anyway.
The reason my P/S belt snapped was because the aircon pulley was stiff to solid. I haven't been able to engage or disengage the a/c clutch since I had the motor, but forking out £300-600 for a new one is not something I am keen on doing, so hopefully I could fit a M13 (non A/C model) belt that will negate the requirement to fit a new a/c pump.

Ok, so I've finally got round to an update on the issue.
Found out that the bottom bracket for the alternator wasn't fitted correctly. Whilst it appeared tight, there was play when the adjuster at the top of the alternator was loosened. For some reason, when the engine was running, it created a sound that oscillated with the revs of the engine, which is what made me think it was a rotational mechanical movement. Bit of a weird one, but a lesson learned in checking everything in there is tight and not just the bits I've unslackened.
