Has anyone done any grit blasting DIY on their Jimny? I was considering taking my axles to someone else to have them professionally done, but now I quite fancy doing a bit of prep work on the underside and chassis, so I'd have to do that myself really.

I've been looking at some cheap set ups that you can get for about £30 (minus the air compressor which I could either hire or borrow), any recommendations? Also wondered about the type of grit to use, perhaps sand, glass bead, anyone have any opinions on the material used?

I've got my jimny propped up on some mega ramps and have pulled out the exhaust and fuel tank so I can get it painted/undersealed, so clearance to sit under there isn't an issue thanks to a good mate.

Don't use sand you'll end up with silicosis.

It's been fettled just a tad.

I did read that when I was searching for info about it last night. But surely glass beads would have the same effect as it's made from sand as well?

I guess the only way to get round that would be to wear air-fed respiratory protection. Guess that's why most people get someone else to do it....

ok,

Just been talking to a mate who blasts and paints. He reckons I should be using garnet 30/60 medium grade to blast steel with. I can get 25kg bag for about £24. Using THIS at it's max pressure around 9 Bar, the bag should last about 30 mins. I can see this being a bit of an expensive operation if I'm not careful. But I might as well do it correctly if I'm going to do it at all. Also, I think the maximum time to have an unprotected exposed blasted metal is about 4 hours, so I'll have to work out how much sections I'm going to do at one time and then spray them with primer at the earliest opportunity.

A long while ago I bought a kit, I think from Aldi, which recirculates the media but never used it as I never felt I had the access.  Looks like you have though. B)
Love those ramps. B)
Any pics of the underside as it is now?
