front drive engaging?

Obviously no, but the seals, angular contact bearings and getting submerged in sloppy mud bits are pretty similar. Bearing and swivel(kingpin) bearing life is similar too!
Are you suggesting it was the vacuum that pulled the mud into the hub because of a poor seal? I'd never considered that. I guess the solution is to engage 4wd before you get axle deep in slop.

Do Defenders have vacuum hubs? I thought they had a centre diff and full time 4wd......they'd break even quicker if they had vac hubsBusta wrote:

So who's idea was it to have an open double AC bearing on an off-roaders front hubs which are submerged in muddy slop.....crazy.
The bearings and seals are arranged in the same manner on most 4x4s are they not? E.g. bearings between hub and spindle, oil seal on inside, hubcap on outside. They certainly are on Defenders.

Ok,
I know it has been a while since I posted this issue. But I found that one of my vacuum servos had stuck in the open position. It just so happened that the one that siezed was for disengaging the hubs hence the continuous 2wd and non engagement of 4wd.
I checked the vacuum when the vehicle was running and there was a constant -ve pressure at the hub hose end. Removed the vacuum servos from under the battery and bench tested them with a 12v source to confirm operation and found one wasn't operating. Got some replacements on order from Cam Suzuki. Hopefully I'll get some replacement hose as well and replace the very rusty metal piping before winter time.
