Scare behind front wheel arch liners was created by mickt
As mentioned in previous topics here my Jimny is due its mot and, having just about sorted the rear ends tin worm, I decided to remove the front wheel arch liners just to make sure all was well as the rest of the structure upfront looked like it had faired well against the creeping cancer that is rust. Mistake big time! The box section that runs across the front and contains the mounting structure for the body to chassis mounting bolts had corroded at the rear of the box and behind the headlamps. At this point the metal is three thicknesses and is going to prove to be a challenge to repair. The problem is the liner that is there to protect these vulnerable areas unfortunately seems to do the opposite at this area. I take it that it is a common rot point on the Jimny?

Yep mine is knackered behind there as well. The liners are a hindrance to be honest. I am tempted to cut the box section out and fab something up much stronger and less likely to rust. It will be a bolt on job at first until I can find someone to weld it in for me.

Yes I threw my liners away on my car 9 years ago when it was 12 months old, I've had a few other jimnys over the years and they have all rotted there but this one that has no liners in has been fine.

This is definitely the way to go. I took mine off and had the rust cut out and new metal let in and it's been good since it's been able to air and dry.

Mystic Rich: I hope you replaced the rot with some sort of structure as without it I would have thought the body mounting would be undermined and a possible fail point!
